How to Get Your First 10 Reviews for a New Business
Ten reviews is the social proof threshold. Research consistently shows that consumers read at least 10 reviews before they feel confident enough to trust a business they have never used. Getting to that number quickly is one of the highest-return activities for a new business owner.
Your first five reviews: personal network
Do not be embarrassed to ask people you know. Family members, friends, and former colleagues who have experienced your work are completely legitimate reviewers. Contact each one personally — a text message or WhatsApp will always outperform a broadcast email. Be specific: "I have just launched my business and would really appreciate it if you could leave a quick review on Yolist or Google — here is the direct link."
Include the direct link to your review page every time. Removing any friction from the process dramatically increases the conversion rate.
Reviews six to eight: invoice follow-up
Within 24 hours of completing a job, send an SMS or WhatsApp to the client. Keep it short: "Thanks for choosing [Your Business]. We really hope you are happy with the work. It would mean a lot if you could take 30 seconds to leave us a quick review — [link]." Timing matters. Customers are most satisfied immediately after a good job is done; the warm feeling fades fast.
The in-person ask template
When face-to-face with a happy client at the end of a job, say: "We are a small business and reviews really help us enormously. Would you be happy to leave us a quick one on Yolist or Google? I can send you the link right now if that helps." Most people will say yes if asked directly and warmly at the right moment.
QR codes on receipts and business cards
Print a QR code that links directly to your Yolist review page and add it to your invoices, receipts, and business cards. Include a one-line instruction: "Happy with our service? Scan to leave a review." This passively generates review requests from every customer interaction.
Why 10 reviews matters
One or two reviews can look like friends-and-family endorsements. Ten or more reviews — especially if they span different months — signal that your business has real, consistent experience. Studies show conversion rates rise sharply at 10, 25, and 50 reviews. Getting to 10 is your first milestone.
Always respond to your first reviews
Reply to every single review you receive — positive ones to say thank you, and any negative ones to address the issue professionally. This signals to future customers that you are attentive, and it signals to Google and Yolist that your listing is actively managed, which benefits your ranking.
Set a goal of reaching 10 reviews within your first 60 days. It is achievable for almost any business, and it transforms how new customers perceive you.
