Bristol hair salons grew 31% since 2022 — UK's fastest growing
Bristol's hair salon sector grew 31% between 2022 and 2026 — faster than any other UK city. The city's student population and a young-professional influx have created one of the country's most dynamic beauty markets.
Bristol has quietly become the UK's fastest-growing city for hair and beauty businesses, with active salon registrations (Companies House SIC 96021) rising 31% between January 2022 and January 2026 — comfortably ahead of Leeds (24%), Manchester (21%), and London (9%).
The growth is partly demographic. Bristol's population grew 8.4% between the 2011 and 2021 Censuses — one of the fastest rates among English core cities — and that trajectory has continued. University of Bristol and UWE Bristol together enrol over 60,000 students, many of whom remain in the city post-graduation, creating a concentration of 22-34 year olds who index highly for salon visits.
Cultural and social dynamics also play a role. Bristol has a well-documented culture of supporting independent businesses: 68% of salons in the BS1–BS8 postcode cluster are independent (vs 44% nationally), with lower rates of national franchise penetration than comparable cities.
Average per-visit spend in Bristol salons has also risen — from £42 in 2022 to £56 in 2026 — outpacing inflation and reflecting a shift toward premium colour services, extensions, and treatment packages.
The concentration of growth is notable: the Stokes Croft, Clifton, and Bedminster corridors account for 58% of new registrations. These areas share affordable commercial rents (by Bristol standards), high foot traffic, and proximity to the demographics driving demand.
