Norfolk and Suffolk lead UK in agricultural business growth 2025

Norfolk and Suffolk recorded combined agricultural business registration growth of 14.2% in 2025 (January 2025 vs January 2024, Companies House SIC codes 01xxx and supporting services), leading all UK regions by a significant margin. The national average agricultural business growth rate was 4.8%.

The headline growth figure masks a significant compositional shift. Traditional arable and livestock registrations grew only 2.1% — much of the overall growth comes from diversified agriculture: farm shops and direct-to-consumer food businesses (+31%), agri-tourism and glamping operations (+44%), renewable energy (anaerobic digestion, solar farms, wind) registrations (+28%), and agricultural contracting services (+19%).

The East of England's natural advantages are well established: flat, fertile land; a climate suited to arable farming; and proximity to Felixstowe (the UK's busiest container port) for export access. What is newer is the scale of diversification, driven by farmer responses to reduced direct payment subsidies post-Brexit and the Environmental Land Management (ELM) scheme incentives for biodiversity net gain.

Norfolk's Breckland district and Suffolk's Waveney Valley are emerging as particular hotspots for diversified agricultural enterprises. Both areas combine lower land costs, strong agri-tourism infrastructure, and active Farming Cluster groups that facilitate knowledge-sharing between businesses.

The growth in direct-to-consumer (D2C) farm businesses is noteworthy: over 340 new farm shop, box scheme, or farmers' market regular-trader registrations in the two counties during 2025, a 38% year-on-year increase.
